The Tradition
One of the world’s greatest mysteries is where the beautiful game of football originated from. While the world may never know that answer, we do know the history of Old Yeller Football Club.
Two young men–and one not so young man–brought
together by fate and their love for the game, decided that it was time
to build there own indoor soccer club. The three Franklin College
grads, and former players for the FC Blue & Gold, were merely sick
and tired of playing with thugs who didn’t want to pass and only showed
up when it was convient for them.
Apart a club known as “Southview, the three and a friend from their college days who had decided to hang up the boots had always toyed with the idea of starting the thier own club. With the sad news of their teammate calling it quits, and knowing they had several other players from all different areas throughout central Indiana interested in playing, Matt Correll (known to most as Midas) took it upon himself to get things rolling and signed a team up for the next indoor session.
All that was missing was a name, and a complete roster...
The two young men–and one not so young man–(Midas, Gavin, and Morlock) would always be brainstorming club names, but could never agree on just what to call the club. So they decided to focus on a kit color instead. With most colors taken, they all agreed on Yellow, as they knew it was available, and would stand out on the pitch.
Jokingly Midas screamed out, “I got it, our team colors are
yellow and Morlock is old, let's be Old Yeller!” If it was almost as
if an angel had descended upon them and gifted Midas with the most
profound idea he has every had in his life–even to this day. After a
long laugh, the three agreed and Old Yeller was born.
The three had know idea what they had started but they knew it was going to be special.
Old Yeller started it’s club history with several big wins and were on their way to glory. They began as an all mens team in the Southside Indy Sports Park men’s A league, where several intense rivalries were formed as well as life long friendships. Many have been fortunate to dawn the famous yellow of Old Yeller, and all speak highly of there time with the club and it’s players–as do the current players enjoy reminiscing of the past players. Several championships were won, and several lost, but Old Yeller remained competitive to the end of every game.
Midas, who held the team together for many years felt it was
time to hang up his
managerial laces. The frustration of organizing players
week-in and week-out grew more and more to be a monumental task. With
several of the long time vets playing on different teams around the
state, they decided to fold Old Yeller. This was a scary time in Old
Yeller Football Club history. The young men–and one not so young
man–feared it might be the last of Old Yeller. The teammates said their
farewells, and for many it was the last time to proudly wear the Old
Yeller uni again.
This football club was not simply a team it was a family,
and family in which brothers decided they could not let this great club
die.
The
future of Old Yeller was re-born, not only as a team again, but as a
co-ed team. This time, Gavin decided it was his time to pay his dues
and assembled the new Old Yeller. The three original members
decided it was time to establish Old Yeller in indoor history for life,
the team was to be known as Old Yeller Football Club, O.Y.F.C. for
short, forever.
Now with expansion to multiple leagues, O.Y.F.C reigns on the pitch with teams in indoor, co-ed indoor, Outdoor Open and Outdoor Over-35.
The numerous league titles, and the countless unforgetable memories shared with teamates and opponents are what makes OYFC tick. This is a club that has become a family on and off the pitch, OYFC will always be in players' and fans' hearts.
